Marriage licenses can be obtained at the Town Clerk's Office. Interested parties must satisfy one of the following criteria:
- Either party is a resident of Narragansett, or
- Both parties live out of state and the marriage will take place in Narragansett.
Required documents are outlined below. If you have any questions about these requirements or the acceptability of your documents, you are urged to contact us before coming to the office to apply for your license. Documents that do not meet the specifications listed below will be rejected, and you will not be issued a marriage license.
Both parties must appear in person. Each party must bring a certified copy of their birth record (government issued).
A government issued photo ID is also required (i.e. driver's license, current passport, military ID, etc.).
If either party was in a previous legal relationship (marriage, civil union or registered domestic partnership), you must provide a certified copy of the most recent final decree of divorce, dissolution of civil union or court ordered annulment (all with the raised or original stamped court seal), or a certified copy of the death record of the previous spouse/partner.
Couples who were joined by civil union in Rhode Island may apply for and be issued a marriage license, or have their civil union legally designated and recorded as a marriage without a marriage ceremony. In either case, this must be done through the Town Clerk's office where the original civil union license was obtained. Please contact the Town Clerk's office for more information.
The fee for the marriage license is $24.00. Once issued, the license is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Applications must be received in the Clerk's office no later than 4:00 PM.
Please allow 20-30 minutes to process your request. You can download and complete the Marriage License Worksheet
